When he reached his hand forward, I just stared at it for a moment before I completed the handshake. It’s not that I didn’t expect it – he had done that with every other person before me – but for some reason my mind and my hand became unsynchronized, and the fact that his hand dwarfed mine somehow made the whole event seem even more surreal. But that brief, tactile moment grounded me for nearly a whole second before my mind floated away from again, but this time much worse.
My brain felt numb; I did not actually say anything important, rather: “Oh my GOD I’m amazing,” which was probably the longest sentence I could composite. I didn’t even tell him how much he’s helped me over the past few years, nor how much I appreciate him. I’m not even sure that I remember all that happened in those five seconds. Nevertheless, all I could think or feel when I shakily walked down the stairs, trying not to drop the box I was carrying, was “Oh my GOD I’m amazing.”
“I’m amazing.”
